What is "Biomechanics" ? and how can it help?

carlislefootclinic

Almost everyday a client visiting for other services asks me "what is biomechanics?” so today I will explain just what Biomechanics is and how it can help.

Biomechanics combines principles from physics, engineering, and biology to analyse and understand the mechanics of movement in the human body. It involves the analysis of the forces that act on the body during movement and how these forces are transferred through the joints and muscles.

Biomechanics is used in a wide range of applications, from sports performance to injury prevention and rehabilitation. In the context of foot problems, biomechanics can help to identify the underlying causes of issues such as foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and flat feet, among others.

Biomechanics can help people with foot problems in several ways. One of the most important ways is by providing a better understanding of the mechanics of foot movement and how it relates to the structure and function of the foot.

For example, if a person is experiencing foot pain, a biomechanical assessment can help to identify the underlying causes of their pain. This may involve analysing their gait (the way they walk) and foot alignment to identify any issues with foot structure or function. By understanding the mechanics of their foot movement, a customised treatment plan can be developed that addresses the root cause of their pain.

Another way that biomechanics can help people with foot problems is by providing insights into how different types of shoes or orthotics can affect foot movement. By analyzing the forces that act on the foot during movement, biomechanists can determine which type of shoe or orthotic is best suited to an individual's needs. This can help to reduce pain, improve comfort, and prevent future injuries.

Biomechanics can also be used to develop customised exercise programs that are tailored to an individual's specific needs. For example, if a person has flat feet, they may benefit from exercises that strengthen the muscles that support the arch of the foot. By understanding the mechanics of foot movement, a Podiatrist can develop an exercise program that targets the specific areas that need to be strengthened.

Biomechanics is a valuable tool in the treatment of foot problems. By understanding the mechanics of foot movement and how it relates to the structure and function of the foot, Podiatrists can develop customised treatment plans that address the root cause of issues such as foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and flat feet, among others. Whether through the use of specialised shoes, orthotics, or exercise programs, biomechanics can help people with foot problems to reduce pain, improve comfort, and prevent future injuries.

If you are experiencing foot pain or other foot problems, consider consulting our Podiatrist to help you identify the root cause of your issues and develop a customised treatment plan that meets your specific needs.
